European Optics Prize 1999 awarded by EOS
The European Optical Society
awarded its prestigious EOS Prize, on the occasion of the EOS
General Meeting on June 7, 2000 in Uppsala, Sweden.
The winner was selected by the EOS Prize committee, consisting
of Prof. M. Hutley (UK), S. Huard (F) and H.A. Ferwerda (NL),
based on the selection criteria of high professionality, academic
and technical quality. Following the EOS Prize rules, the conditions
for eligibility are that the work was performed in Europe and
that it is published under the auspices of the EOS.
The winner of the European Optics Prize 1999 is the research
group consisting of Jes Broengi, Thomas Sondergaard, Stig E Barkou,
Pablo M Barbeito and Andres Bjarklev from the Center for Communications,
Optics and Materials (COM) of the Technical University of Denmark
at Lingby for their joint paper "Waveguidance by the
photonic bandgap effect in optical fibres", published
in the Journal of the European Optical Society, Part A Pure
and Applied Optics number 4, July 1999, a Special
issue on electromagnetic optics based on selected papers presented
at the EOS Topical Meeting on Electromagnetic Optics, held in
Hyères, France, 7-9 September 1998.
The representative of EOS, Mike Hutley had the great pleasure
to welcome Andres Bjarklev, who accepted the prize on behalf
of all the co-authors. In the name of his colleagues, Andres
Bjarklev gave the audience an excellent review of the work done
in this collaboration.
The EOS Prize 1999 consists of a sum of 1000 ECU and the following
certificate:
